I have a fascination for the dark and morbid, and I blame that on
Dave McKean. At the tender age of twelve I stepped into a comic
store, picked up a batman-book at random expecting the usual DC
Comic stuff, flipped the page and found myself looking into the eyes
of a woman with cockroaches falling out of her mouth. The picture
was revolting, but the woman was portrayed with a tenderness,
sympathy and sadness that made it so much more. The book was Arkham
Asylum, written by Grant Morrison with illustrations by Dave McKean.
It had everything I wanted from a work of art and a comic, and I had
no idea that stories could be told quite like this.
That's an experience that was very important to me. After seeing his
work I spent a lot of time trying to actually become Dave
McKean, though fortunately that proved to be quite difficult. With
time the excessive fanboyism subsided, and other influences became
more and more important; Anders Zorn and Jeffrey Jones just to name
a couple. I hope I'm able to draw from these sources and build
something that is uniquely my own.
